Motorola XT1056 (Sprint X Phone?) spotted at the FCC

A new Motorola device has been spotted at the FCC with model number XT1056,...

A new Motorola device has been spotted at the FCC with model number XT1056, suggesting we could be looking at yet another Google X Phone variation.
While Google has not confirmed the X Phone yet, speculation based on available evidence seemed to indicate that the XT1058 (a model also seen at the FCC recently) is AT&T’s X Phone version.

Soon after that, we saw an XT1060 mentioned in a leaked Motorola file, believed at the time to be Verizon’s X Phone version.
The XT1056 has a model number that suggest it may be part of the same family of handsets, and according to the available FCC documentation, the device packs support for Sprint’s LTE bands.
Interestingly, an XT1055 has also been spotted in alleged benchmark, and was believed to be an X Phone version. The FCC filing for the XT1056 doesn’t reveal other details about the handset, but we’ll note that the provided drawing (above) isn’t similar to the one saw in FCC documentation for the XT1058 (below). In fact, the image for the later seemed to indicate that the AT&T-bound handset could be similar to that Motorola handset spotted in Vietnam in mid-March.To recap, so far we have two confirmed model numbers for upcoming Motorola devices, the XT1058 and the XT1056, while other two versions have appeared in various reports including the XT1055 and the XT1060 (in case they're real, they should hit the FCC in the future as well). But we'll have to wait some more to see whether these devices will actually be X Phones for their respective carriers, or not, so keep holding to that grain of salt for now.

HTC Desire 600 is official: a quad-core mid-ranger with BoomSound and BlinkFeed

HTC Desire 600, a dual-SIM device featuring a quad-core CPU, has been made...

HTC Desire 600, a dual-SIM device featuring a quad-core CPU, has been made official by the company.

The device was spotted in benchmarks not too long ago, and now it's finally a fact. If you were looking for a dual-SIM device with a good set of specifications, the HTC Desire 600 might be right up your alley.
The smartphone features a Snapdragon 200 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM memory, as well as a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 display at qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels). The internal memory is 8 GB, while the battery is a 1860mAh unit.
As far as the camera goes, the device has an 8 megapixel shooter on its back, and there's also a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, which should be quite useful for video calls.

The best part of the device is that it borrows some of the HTC One‘s features, making it even more tempting. You get the BoomSound speakers and Beats Audio integration, for great music and videos, as well as BlinkFeed, the Flipboard-like app that brings you news from over 1400 sources straight to your homescreen.
The HTC Desire 600, which seems very similar to the 606w that recently went through the approval process in China, runs Android Jelly Bean, according to the press release (version 4.1.2, tells us the benchmark result from the other day). The device is set to be available at the start of next month in Russia, Ukraine and the Middle East, through operators and retailers. No word on price or availability in the rest of the world yet.
Would you be tempted to buy the HTC Desire 600? Let us know in the comments.

Further confirmation that the new Nexus 7 is coming in July

A report from a supplier of tablet components adds further credibility to...

A report from a supplier of tablet components adds further credibility to rumors about a new Nexus 7 coming this summer.

By now, the fact that a new version of the Nexus 7 is coming is almost confirmed. Many expected to see it at Google I/O, and were disappointed when Google called it a day without showing off any new hardware. But that doesn’t mean that a refresh of the popular Nexus 7 isn’t on its way.

Most rumors suggest that the refreshed Nexus 7 would come in July, and today we have another report supporting this timeline.
Elan Microelectronics, a Taiwanese supplier of integrated circuitry for touchscreen devices, is reported to have already begun shipping touchscreen controllers for the next generation of the Nexus 7. The caveat is that the source of this information are the notoriously hit-and-miss “industry sources” of Digitimes.
Thanks to the order for Nexus 7 controllers, Elan is said to boast increased revenues in May and June. This tells us that the device itself is being manufactured in June, which goes nicely with the earlier reports about the release of the Nexus 7 in July.
The device is said to be launching along a new version of Android, 4.3. In addition, a research note from an analyst revealed some of the supposed specifications of the tablet, which include a Snapdragon 600 processor and a 1920 by 1200 display, while the price will remain the same as the first generation.

Bottom line, if you plan to buy a Nexus 7 this summer, you might want to wait until July.

PSA: Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 now available for purchase

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 is now available from the carrier's website,...

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 is now available from the carrier's website, right on the promised date.

You may remember that the handset was promised for May 23 by the carrier that took the first place in customer satisfaction, and here it is, right on schedule. Of course, that doesn't mean it's not late compared to other carriers, but you have to appreciate a kept promise.

The device, 16GB version, is available from Verizon's online store for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract, of course. An extra $49.99 will also add the accessory bundle to the package, which includes a silicone cover in the color of your new device, a display protector and a car charger.
However, if you'd rather have month-to-month service, you'll have to shell out $649.99 to buy your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. It's available both in Black Mist and White Frost color versions.
It will be interesting to see if it will come to Verizon in one of the recently announced new color versions, when they'll be available.

While that remains to be seen, an even more interesting thing is that you can already purchase the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 for a cheaper price, at Amazon Wireless. The retailer has the same 16 GB version in both black and white starting at $179.99 with a two-year contract. Are you planning on getting a Samsung Galaxy S4? Where will you buy Samsung's flagship device from?

HTC One delay apology comes in the form of a $25 Google Play Store gift card

The HTC One delays have been pretty annoying for those getting HTC's flagship...

The HTC One delays have been pretty annoying for those getting HTC's flagship device, so the company has decided to make up for the inconvenience.
The company is doing so by offering you, provided you ordered the device from its website (where you can get the unlocked 32 GB edition and 64 GB Developer Edition) a $25 Google Play Store gift card, sent via e-mail.

Bright Side of News reports that it has received the gift card, and posts a screenshot of it, which you can see below. So do a few users on the XDA Developers Forums, all sounding very happy, which only comes to prove what a small gesture of respect for customers can do for a company's image.

The HTC One's sales have been plagued by component shortages ever since the device's launch, and the company seems to be facing serious personnel-related issues these days. Still, not all seems to be bad in HTC Land, as sales of the HTC One are very encouraging, despite the company still facing some component shortages.
If you've ordered your One from HTC's website, have you received your gift card yet? What do you think about HTC's idea?

Trying to fit a larger, higher resolution screen into a smaller, thinner body...

Trying to fit a larger, higher resolution screen into a smaller, thinner body has been the name of the game for the past two years, and LG, not one to back down from a challenge, has unleashed its latest 5-inch display with a 1 mm-slim bezel.
LG showed off its latest display at the the Society for Information Display 2013 convention, in Vancouver, where it also demoed its flexible OLED HD panel.
The 5-inch display has only been rated as HD right now, meaning it is most likely of the 720p variant, rather than the Full HD displays that have been seen in high-end smartphones this year. However, the screen does utilize the popular IPS technology, meaning it benefits from the same wide viewing angles as other displays of the same class.
It also uses TFT Oxide technology for low power consumption and the slim bezel which gives its name. The model being showcased is only rated at 250 nits, but LG does expect a higher brightness by the time the screen makes it to the market.
LG hasn’t given an exact time frame as to when the panel will be ready for mass production, only offering the vague “ASAP” statement. Here’s hoping we see an improved pixel density as well. Check out the pictures of the display in action below, courtesy of Engadget.Impressed with LG’s displays? Looking forward to seeing this screen in LG’s smartphone, perhaps the Nexus 5?

Amidst a flurry of negative reports, a glimmer of hope for HTC – the One is...

Amidst a flurry of negative reports, a glimmer of hope for HTC – the One is selling relatively good, moving five million units since launch.
The last few days brought us a series of worrying news about HTC. According to insiders cited by The Verge, there’s an executive exodus going on at the embattled Taiwanese phone maker, with the company’s Chief Product Officer and top marketing exec leaving for sunnier shores. Then CNET Asia reported that two top executives from HTC Asia, one of the company’s critical markets, have also decided to pursue other interests.

The wave of departures is a sign of internal struggle, but amidst all the bad news, there is a glimmer of hope. According to an anonymous HTC executive cited by WSJ, the crucial HTC One is selling “pretty good so far.”
The executive revealed that HTC sold about five million One units since launch, a performance that is deemed encouraging. However, sales have been limited by the persisting supply issues that still plague the production of the HTC One.

Here’s the key quote from the HTC executive:

Quote:

Orders are pretty good so far and are still more than what we can supply. This is partly due to the shortage of components. When the issue is resolved next month, we will have a better idea if it's doing really well or not.

As you can see, the demand for the One is larger than the supply, and the component shortage is only partially responsible, which could be good news for HTC. To speculate, it may mean that customers love the HTC One and that sales could further increase once the manufacturing issues are finally solved.
How good is the 5 million sales figure? Samsung just trumpeted today the reach of the 10 million sales milestone for the Galaxy S4. The HTC One began selling in late March in Germany and the UK, and in late April, in the US, China, and other markets. Given the supply issues and the stuttered release, it’s probably safe to say that the One and the Galaxy S4 have been out for about the same time on the market.

I think that the fact that HTC managed to sell 5 million Ones in about a month of full availability is encouraging. Consider that HTC is nowhere near the influence it had in its heyday, and it now lacks the carrier clout and marketing spending power that Samsung uses so liberally. So the fact that HTC managed to sell half as many phones as Samsung is a pretty good sign.
We’ll see how the HTC One does once the supply issues are fully resolved, but so far, it’s good news for Peter Chou, who reportedly vowed to step down from the top of HTC if the One fails to bring a turnaround to the company.

Google seen as a more valuable brand than McDonald’s and Coke

The Oscars equivalent for brand names, the BrandZ list of the most valuable...

The Oscars equivalent for brand names, the BrandZ list of the most valuable global brands of 2013, has been published and the three most valuable brands are technology companies. Apple, Google and IBM top the charts followed by the food giants McDonald's and Coca-Cola. The BrandZ list, which is now in its eighth year, ranks the brands according to the views of potential and current buyers of a brand along with financial data. Although Apple remains on the top with a brand value of $185 billion, it only managed to grow 1 percent in the last year. This could be potentially worrying as it closest real world competitor Samsung grew its brand value by 51 percent. However the Korean electronics giant still has some way to go to catch Apple and Google as it is only ranked at number 30 with a brand value of $21 billion.
Google's brand value was actually in decline when the 2012 list was published, but this year the search giant and benevolent curator of Android grew its brand value by 5 percent to swap places with IBM and secure the number 2 spot with a brand value of $114 billion. IBM is now number 3 with a brand value of $112 billion.
Resisting the urge to philosophize about why the three the most valuable global brands are technology companies and why the next two are fast food related brands, it is worth noting that Microsoft is the seventh most valuable brand, having dropped two places from 2012, with a brand value of $69 billion. Amazon is 14th at $45 billion and Facebook ranks just after Samsung at 31 with $21 billion.

Showing the economic power of China, there are at least three Chinese brands in the top 40 including China Mobile (number 10 with $55 billion), China Construction Bank (at number 22 with $26 billion – more than Samsung and Amazon) and the Agriculture Bank of China (taking the 37th spot with a brand value of just under $20 billion).
What is also interesting is that Sony, LG, Nokia and HTC don't appear anywhere in the top 100. This is an odd dichotomy in that the biggest two brands Apple and Google are technology companies with heavy interests in smartphones. They are clearly valuable brands, but other than Samsung (and Microsoft) no other smartphone manufacturer appears in the top 100. This only goes to prove Apple's genius at marketing and Google solid position as a household name.
Does the list reflect your value of these brands? Let me know by leaving a comment below.

official: Galaxy S4 hits 10 million milestone, more colors coming this summer

Samsung announced that the Galaxy S4 has broken previous sales records,...

Samsung announced that the Galaxy S4 has broken previous sales records, selling 10 million units in less than a month of availability.
It isn’t actually a surprise, but the Galaxy S4 is selling like hotcakes. Samsung announced today the first major milestone in the life of its latest flagship, and, predictably, the fact that the milestone was reached faster than ever before.
Less than a month since the Galaxy S4 became available in the first market, Samsung clocked in the 10 millionth sold unit. How impressive is this performance? Well, the original Galaxy S needed seven months to sell ten million units, the Galaxy S2 needed five months, while last year’s popular Galaxy S3 reached the milestone in 50 days.

Put another way, Samsung sold four Galaxy S4’s every second since the device went on sale, 27 days ago.
While this is a huge performance for Samsung, we have to note that the Galaxy S4 is still not the bestselling smartphone ever, the title belonging (for now) to Apple’s iPhone.
To go with the festive mood today, Samsung also announced the upcoming availability of several new colors for the Galaxy S4. Just like last year, the Koreans are aiming to provide a color scheme for every taste, meaning that, in addition to the Black Forest and White Mist models out now, we’ll also see a Blue Arctic (already out in Japan), Red Aurora, Purple Mirage and Brown Autumn. The new models are slated to start selling “this summer”.
